On the outside, bones look solid and rock-like, but they're not.
They're living tissue.
There is a smooth, hard, outside layer called cortical, bone, and the inside, is a strong, lightweight, honeycomb-like structure, called trabecular bone,
which contains blood vessels, and bone marrow.
The combination of cortical and trabecular bone
enables the skeleton to be light, strong, flexible and efficient.
In a process called remodeling our skeletons maintain themselves by replacing any weakened areas with new bone tissue. This process goes on constantly and a healthy person will have their entire skeleton replaced little by little every 10 years. But in bones with Osteoporosis, the remodeling process gets out of whack. Weakened bone is broken down but little or nothing takes it's place. Bones can lose so much density that they can break during everyday activities like stepping off a curb or picking up a grocery bag. Osteoporosis is a hormone driven disease. Women after menopause and older men are at the most risk. 80% are women. 50% of women and 25% of men will have an Osteoporosis related fracture in their lifetime.
But osteoporosis is treatable and largely preventable. You'll learn how you can prevent Osteoporosis and what you can do to manage and even reverse it if you do have it.
